Indigenous Governments

I work closely with Indigenous governments to support their in-house legal needs as they arise. This can include representing the government by providing direct services to citizens and beneficiaries - such as preparing wills and other estate planning documents - as well as offering in-house counsel services like legal opinions, advice, and policy guidance.

Before founding SKD Law, I served in-house with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, where I worked on a wide range of matters, from researching land use and reviewing contracts, to drafting procurement agreements and advising on Indigenous legislation and policy. One of the most rewarding parts of that work was helping to operationalize IRC’s child welfare laws in collaboration with the Health and Wellness division. I had the privilege of supporting the growth of Inuvialuit Qitunrariit Inuuniarnikkun Maligaksat, taking it from an initial spreadsheet to a fully developed system with multiple programs and dedicated teams.

Over the years, I have travelled to almost every community in the Northwest Territories. I believe it is essential to spend time in the communities, to listen, and to understand local perspectives. These experiences have shaped my approach to advocacy, ensuring that my work reflects the voices and priorities of the people I serve.

Today, I represent Indigenous governments in courts across Canada, ensuring that Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully included when decisions are made about Indigenous children and families in the child welfare system. My work is grounded in respect, collaboration, and a commitment to advancing the vision and priorities of the communities I serve.
